#3. God's Word is Truth

Psalm 119:160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

"What is truth?" asked Pilate on the day he interviewed Jesus. It is a simple and yet profound question.

We live in a day and age that doesn't really acknowledge such a thing as absolute truth. One person's idea is as valid as anyone else's. All religions are equally acceptable, even when they teach completely opposite things. The result is that we tend to go with what most people think is OK and adopt a standard which is subject to change based on time and culture. But is this really the situation? Is there nothing we can turn to which sets a timeless standard of truth, which is objective, unchanging and unchangeable? Are we indeed subject to whim and fashion, to convenience and caprice to decide the moral issues of our day? If this is so, then we are all at sea.

Thankfully, God has not left us in such a hopeless place. He has given us His Word and has answered Pilate's question. See what the psalmist says in our text - "The sum of your Word is truth". When you add it up, God's Word is Truth. It is absolute Truth. It contains no lies, no deceptions, nothing that is even remotely doubtful, and it never changes because it never stops being the truth!

Jesus confirmed that this was also His view of the Word in His High Priestly prayer, where He asks God to sanctify His people through the truth, and then adds, "Your Word is Truth".

What a remarkable thing it is, that we hold in our hands THE Truth! That we can open its pages and know the truth on all issues of life, religion, morality and eternity!

The irony for Pilate was that he had Jesus, the Living Truth, standing in front of him when he asked his question, but he never recognized Who Jesus was. Let's make sure we do recognize the Bible in our hands for what it is - the written Truth of God, and let's devote time to reading it as such in the week ahead!
