3. Reasons to Read and Hear the Word

God has given us a very special treasure in His Word.  It contains a revelation of Himself above and beyond what may be deduced from the things He has created.  It also contains His way of salvation and is for His children the only authoritative guide to faith and practice. Spurgeon used to say of the students at his Bible college that, if they were cut, they should bleed the Bible - it should be such an integral part of their lives and their characters, their thoughts and their desires.  The Psalmists were often enraptured with the precepts of God that are found in His Word. We have God's Word available to us in more translations than most of us can even remember but sadly in many cases all our household Bibles do is to gather dust on bookshelves.  The series presented here is therefore designed to give us reasons from the Bible to encourage and persuade us to read its pages more than we currently do.  It is as we read and listen to God's Word and God's Spirit uses it in our lives that it will do the work for which God gave it to us - that of salvation and sanctification.  Our prayer is that we all might become avid students of the Word - and not just hearers of it but doers also!
