#6. God's Word is Everlasting

Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away."

1 Peter 1:25 "BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you.

We are continuing in our consideration of the characteristics of God's Word, having seen that it is inspired, inerrant, Truth and Upright.  This week, we want to see that it is also everlasting.

In certain kingdoms historically (for example some of the kingdoms of Persia), when a king set his seal to a new law, there was no way in which it could be repealed or annulled.  We have an expression today, "The law of the Medes and the Persians", which we use to talk about something that is stated in such a way that it is not intended for others to change it subsequently.

The problem with man making such unchangeable decrees is that, although it sounds very grandiose and awe-inspiring,  he does not possess the wisdom and the knowledge that is necessary because of the effects of sin on his heart and mind.  Often what he ends up doing, then, is making something that is unchangeably wrong! Then he has to resort to all kinds of subterfuge to change what was supposed to have been unchangeable.

Those of us who are not kings generally say things at breakfast that have little or no relevance by dinner time! Circumstances change, our moods alter, our words are far from everlasting.

God does not suffer from these difficulties and problems.  He does possess all knowledge and all wisdom, knowing the end from the beginning.  In Himself He does not change, so when He says something, it is always right, always true, always good and always relevant.  There is never any need to change anything He has said - His Words are everlasting!

Jesus tells us in the first of our texts that while created things may pass away, God's Words will not and can not.  Peter underlines that what is declared to us from the Bible is this Word that endures forever.  DO we ever think how special this is?  When we listen to the preaching of the Word or sit down to read our Bibles, we are in the realm of the eternal, the everlasting!  We are mere blips on the timeline of creation, but this Word is timeless.  It will be no less the Word of God, no less true and upright, no less relevant in a billion billion years than it is today!

So when you pick up your Bible, think about this and thank God for putting such treasure into your hands.  Read it often, absorb its truths, meditate on its precepts and seek to know Him better through the Words He has spoken.
