#8. God's Word is Special Revelation

2 Timothy 3:15 ...from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Paul tells his readers in Rome that no living person has a viable excuse for failing to believe in God.  This, Paul says, is because God has revealed a lot about Himself in the things He has created: "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." (Romans 1:20).  In other words, we need do nothing more to know that there is a God, and to know quite a lot about Him, than to use the senses He has given us to consider what He has created.  Of course, most people choose to suppress the truth of this revelation, preferring to shut it out of their thinking and maintain a life of unbelief.  "You have no excuse for behaving that way" says Paul.

Theologians call the evidence God has given in the creation concerning Himself "General Revelation" and it is remarkable how much we can know about Him by paying attention to these things.  However, there are other, critical things we could never learn from created things.  For example, while it is pretty obvious that all is not well with the creation and we might deduce from some of the catastrophes that take place that the One Who created all things is not pleased with His creatures, we could never discern the cause of the problem (our sin) and, more importantly, we could never know that in His mercy, God has provided a way to be reconciled to Him by sending His Son to keep the Law for us and to receive the punishment our sins deserve. To know these things, and to know what God has chosen to reveal concerning the future of His creation, we needed the Bible - a "special revelation" from God.  That is what Paul says about the Bible (the "sacred writings") in our text.

If we do not read God's special revelation, therefore, we are choosing to cut ourselves off from the source of the most important information that was ever written.  We are deciding to ignore the only map that can infallibly guide us away from eternal death and destruction and to eternal life.  We are abandoning something that God uses powerfully in people to rescue them and to re-create them in the image of the Lord, Jesus Christ!

That book that you are holding in your hands, or worse, that is gathering dust on your bookshelf, is vital for your current and future spiritual life, usefulness, happiness and well being! Knowing this, how could you neglect to read its pages?
