#5. God's Word is Pure and Upright

Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
Psalm 33:4 For the word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness.

We are continuing our meditations on what the Word of God is.  We have seen that it is inspired, that it is Truth and that it is without error.  This week our texts tell us that this Word is pure and upright.

We live in a fallen world where every thought is polluted by sin, where every deed is done with motives that are corrupt and where every word spoken is tainted.  Isaiah felt the wretchedness of this situation when he cried out, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5).  How remarkable then, that in the midst of all the impure words spoken by the unclean lips of the people of this world, we should have easy access to pure words - so pure they are like silver refined to perfection!  How wonderful that when all the words that we are capable of are polluted, we can lay our hands on a book that is full of upright words!

This concept goes beyond the idea of truth and inerrancy.  Here, we are given to understand that the Word of God is morally perfect and without blemish or defect.  We thought before about the truth of God's Word in contrast to error in the world but now we are focusing on the fact that it is right, whereas the words of the world are wrong - it is spotless light in contrast to their darkness.

We have already seen more than enough about the Word of God to make us desire it, and love it, and esteem it above any number of man's words.  In the coming week, remember this purity and this uprightness of the Bible, and eagerly read its pages and absorb its teachings!
